Mother Mother defines reading as “sitting with or inside a story or creation; sitting with a creator’s body of work and the labors it took to bring that work forth.” In Mother Mother’s Reading Room, the reading we do is multimodal and multidimensional. Sometimes it involves words on a page, sometimes movement in a space, sometimes bodies on a stage, and sometimes rhythms in a song. Essentially the reading is in the being with the work, and the ones who create the work.
Mother Mother defines room as “space to expand, explore, and feel into a thing and what it stirs up in your life; a living room for creative experimentation.” In the Reading Room, we are discovering how to live more deeply inside the vastness of our creativity, and consciously engaging the works of those who most inspire us—including our brilliant selves!— as we invite evermore imaginative experimentation inside our own creative practices. The room is the generous permission we give ourselves to let our creativity take up more space in our day to day lives, and to pour more intentionality, time, and resources into our creations and our labors as creators.

Here is where Mother Mother reveals pieces of her process and invites engagement with assorted creations as they are being brought to life.
Mother Mother’s Reading Room is a kitchen table where creators gather, share, and play with each other. Here is where language is developing inside the vast worlds of their brilliant stories, where materials and methodologies for the advancement of creative practices everywhere are crafted with abundant love and curiosity, and where courageous pathways for soul-deep creations are devised and brought to life, or resurrected and reimagined in the truth of each creator’s becoming.
Mother Mother’s Reading Room is a laboratory for sitting inside of the labors and creations born of ourselves, of our creator foremothers, of inspiring creators we encounter today, and of other brilliant artists, thinkers, and makers who move something within our spirits. Here is where we read underneath and between and around the lines, pose tender, bold, illuminating questions, and discover transformative relationships to the practical and spiritual dimensions of our creativity. Here is where we welcome robust experimentation, articulate daring visions for a bright and near future, and celebrate the intelligence and vulnerability it takes to reach toward freedom and live a life that is in harmony with our calling as creators.

Here is where we activate a collective sojourn and travel deep inside a constellation of creative works that are primarily sourced by the brilliance of black women creators, women creators, and creators of color. We also explore tools, offerings and methodologies that enhance our experiences as creative practitioners and expand our relationship to creativity.
Our Reading Room “texts” are drawn from a variety of art disciplines and genres, such as books, poetry, film, dance, art, essay, and music. At the heart of every adventure in the Reading Room is an opportunity to get to know ourselves as creators more intimately, and to initiate the creation of something beautiful and transformative from there.

In the midst of her many labors for her children, family, mama village and enterprises, Mother Mother lovingly and joyfully devotes hundreds of hours a month to reading, researching, writing, and curating the offerings and experiences in the Reading Room. She makes the Reading Room accessible to the lovely folks who feel called to participate in this space without any payment required. Mother Mother trusts that those who feel nourished by this space and her work will join a Sustainability Circle or make a donation at the Giving Well.
