Wildseed Family Learning Lab is the heart and home of Mother Mother’s visionary, family-centered learning practice. Before her children were born, and before she had language for herself as an afrofuturist bush mama, and before Wildseed even had its name, she dreamed of nurturing a frequency of discovery, freedom, and adventure with her children.
When her oldest children were the babies she consciously began designing what would become Wildseed, and activated the language “family learning lab” as an intentional way to speak about the extensive labors and creations she was developing for her children and their family’s learning journeys. Experimentation, curiosity, and kindness are core values of Wildseed learning spaces. Every question can be a doorway, a spark, into something fantastic that will take us beyond what we don’t yet know we’re longing to know.
For these reasons (and many more), the word “homeschool” felt too flat, and too rigid, and too small for what Mother Mother was really dreaming into. Mother Mother feels that raising her children outside of the dominant systems of education and schooling is akin to raising her children “in the wild,” so Wildseed felt like the best name for their family experiments in learning. Also essential to Wildseed’s mission is creating pathways for dear family and friends, awesome neighbors, beloved community members, and innovative organizational partners to meaningfully engage and contribute to the magic happening at Wildseed.
Kinetic learners
Wildseed centers movement as essential to all learning. As a family of movers, dancers, capoeristas, runners, leapers, flippers, bikers, climbers, and spinners, kinetic learning is at the heart of all things Wildseed. In these years of experimenting with and exploring the ways her children learn, Mother Mother has been developing practices and resources to support other families, parents, caregivers, and educators in expanding their movement consciousness for the young people—and grown folks too!—in their world. The more we move, the more joy we activate, and the more we grow!
The energy, vision, and substance of Wildseed is sourced by Mother Mother’s dancing body brilliance, and much of her moments as a dancing mother happen inside of and alongside learning moments and activities with her children. Movement matters deeply to us and plays a vital role in all of our studies. Each family member brings a unique kinesthetic intelligence to our field of discovery, and we learn more about whatever it is we are exploring because we actively seek to connect to it through the movements happening in and around our bodies.
